Timing the Model A Engine

For the Model A engine to function correctly, timing must be set periodically. Timing refers to the point in the four-cycle process where the spark plug fires.

Tools

• 1/2" wrench
• Hand crank
• Flat head screw driver
• Timing cam wrench
• 6v test light

Timing Procedure

1. Ensure the ignition is off, the transmission is in neutral (center position), and the timing lever is set to full retard (all the way up).

2. Using the 1/2" wrench, remove the timing pin from the front of the engine.

   The timing pin is located on the lower left of the front engine cover.

   

3. Insert the timing pin into the timing hole (where you just removed it) with the rounded pin in and the threaded end out.

4. Using the hand crank, turn the engine over slowly while pressing in on the timing pin. When the number one piston reaches top dead center, you will feel the timing pin drop into a recess in the timing gear.

5. Remove the distributor cap and body by releasing the two spring clamps.

   

6. Remove the rotor by pulling straight up.

   

7. Loosen the distributor cam locking screw until the cam can be turned.
