Changing the Oil in a Model A Ford
The Model A Ford is not equipped with an oil filter, which
means that regular oil changes are critical for engine life.
Safety
- Approprate eye protection for working under the car
- Ensure the engine is cool enough that the oil will not
cause burns.
Required parts
- 4 quarts of 20w50 engine oil
- Replacement oil drain plug washer
- Additive for lead-burning engines, if desired
Tools
The oil pan is located at the bottom of the engine. The
drain plug is on the right (passenger's side) of the oil pan.
Changing the Oil
- With the engine warm, but not hot, climb under the car and place
the oil drain pan below the oil drain plug.
- Using the socket, remove the plug
- Allow the oil to drain completely
- Replace the fiber washer on the plug with a new washer
- When the oil stops draining, replace the plug
Be sure not to overtighten.
- Remove the oil filler cap from the engine

- Using the funnel, pour oil into the filler neck
- Check the dipstick to ensure that sufficient oil is in the
engine for safe operation. If low, add more.
- Replace the oil filler cap
- Safely dispose of used oil
